I’ve always felt invidious of people with extraordinary memories. You know, the kind of people who stockpile encyclopedic knowledge with seemingly little effort, while the rest of us brawl to remember the name of the person we were introduced to literally seconds ago.
Don’t you worry, zuperly guarantees you, there’s hope for all of us.
Whether you need to study for an exam, want to learn a new language, hope to avoid embarrassing memory lapses (what’s the name of your boss’ spouse?), or simply want to stay mentally sharp, improving your memory is much easier than it sounds. All it takes is trying out new memorization techniques or making key adjustments in your lifestyle. Our minds capacity is wondrous, we are capable of much more than we can imagine. Like we have hacks in everything else, here’s a few hacks/ways to enhance your memory.
- Try becoming interested in what you’re learning.
Mindfulness comes in play, yet again. A few things that don’t excite us, we tend to forget! On the other hand, you’ve to agree; you’d never forget your crushes’ name. Likewise, if there’s a supposedly boring essay you have to learn but you’re not intrinsically interested in what you’re learning or trying to remember, you must find a way to become so.
2. Creating a mental memory tree
If you’re trying to memorize a large number of facts, find a way to relate them in your mind visually with a memory tree. Construct big branches first, then leaves. Branches and leaves should carry labels that are personally meaningful to you in some way, and the organization of the facts (“leaves”) should be logical. We remember bits of information better if we chunk them.
3. Writing out the items you need to memorize over and over again.
This personally has been something that my mother taught me. It’s a traditional method but yes it is helpful. Don’t just copy the list of words you’re trying to recall but actively recall each item you learn and write it down again and again.
4. Getting adequate sleep is a must!
Not just at night after you’ve studied but the day before you study as well. Far better to do this than to stay up cramming all night for an exam.
5. Try and associate what you’ve already learnt to what you already know.
It seems the more mental connections we have to a piece of information, the more successful we’ll be in remembering it. This is why using mnemonics actually improves recall.
Yes champ, you got this! Get, set, LEARN!
